It’s not a return to work, we’ve been working successfully in a pandemic. When you talk about hybrid working, it’s about work that can be done from an office, from home or from any other location. Therefore it’s a fair assumption these people have been working remotely, often more successfully than before. Therefore they aren’t returning to work, they are being mandated to work in an office some of the time. Also when you write about “face to face” I assume you mean shared location because if I’m on a zoom call and I can see a person’s face and they can see mine, this is literally face to face and their face appears bigger than it would be across a desk in a conference room. You write “Stories like these are yet another sign that the balance of power between employers and employees has shifted. This is a key consideration for hybrid working.” I disagree. The balance has shifted, however this is now a key consideration for a data led initiative around what works best. Hybrid as a policy definitely isn’t best. Why is this? Because it means the organisation has control, irrespective of data. Because it means I see some jobs mandating one day a week in the office which means the company can only recruit from its locality rather than nationwide or globally. There are a lot of biased opinions going around, often from companies with self serving interests such a revenue stream from property rentals or with a brand new shiny office on a new lease that they want to see used. When we look at independent, objective data such as commissioned by a university or by a chartered organisation we see a pattern that people want to choose. This is the way forward that the workforce of today expects – leadership providing enablement and support. Leaders who put people first and are backing up their views with objective data rather than leaders who like busy offices or evaluating home working against a pandemic when some were struggling with home schooling too. I have been writing on this topic for almost 30 years, my latest articles have been featured by both LinkedIn news and Medium. “Let us choose” seems to be what people want – as a leader why wouldn’t you want to put your workforce first over mandating a legacy way of working and missing out on the benefits?
