Imprecision of language is a real issue. If even security professionals differ on definitions, how can the non-specialists (especially on Boards) grasp the real nature of the threats. And that’s bad enough when we’re dealing with native English speakers; life gets even more interesting when others are using English as a common language, each perhaps with their own understanding of the convenient buzz word “cyber”.
So far so good, but buzz words stick for a reason and it’s a challenge to wean people away from them. That said, I think we’re beginning to win with “advanced persistent threat”, no longer as universally quoted as it was and over-used to the point of utter meaninglessness. So let’s try! I’ll begin re-writing my material today….
