I have been a techUK member for nearly a year and attended excellent meetings. I had the chance to talk about the contributions I can make with the invention of my software methods to develop data skills.

I have also made a suggestion of how to make bidding more effective to Crown Commercial Services.

I have attended Open DEFRA meetings hoping to get funding.

What else can I do?

With the skills shortage in digital and science what about tapping into the skills that already exist with women who have taken a career break for family. They have the skills however seem to struggle to get back into employment because they need flexible hours. I know many who have exactly the skills needed but can’t work traditional (old school) hours at one location. In the digital age, why do they need to be in one location working a 9-5. Are we still in the 1950’s?

The time has come to address the long standing disconnect between the academic skills priorities of the skills funding agencies (for RE/HE) and the vocational skills needs of employers (large and small, current and bleeding edge. The six point plan which the Digital Policy Alliance has just issued in advance of a 21st Century Skills review meeting summarises both the problem and a way forward. You are absolutely right. We need a coordinated effort to bring all the different initiatives together to get more young people into tech, especially girls. I am involved in so many across our region including Durham County Council, Dynamo North East, FDisruptors, NEICT etc.
