It existed in parallel to the \u2018real world\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>But today almost everything is digital.<\/p>\n<p>Money, employment, entertainment, education, shopping, health \u2013 if you\u2019re connected and capable you can do it all better, faster and easier. The thing is, that\u2019s a much bigger \u2018if\u2019 than you might think \u2013 almost one in four of the adult British population doesn\u2019t have the Basic Digital Skills to be properly included in this digital world.<\/p>\n<p>Go ON UK is a charity with the sole aim of including all of us in the digital world. Lloyds\u00a0Digital\u00a0spoke to its CEO, Rachel Neaman.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cLiteracy and Numeracy were the two fundamental skills that allowed people to contribute fully to society and achieve their potential. Today Digital Literacy has joined them.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Go ON UK works with partners across all sectors to improve Basic Digital Skills across the UK. Their aim is not just to gather individuals into the digital fold, but businesses and charities too. This is vital if Britain is to compete on the global economic stage.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cYou might expect that digital exclusion was primarily a problem for the elderly, but just over 50% of the digitally excluded are over 65. And equally, it\u2019s a myth that all young people are so-called digital natives \u2013 just being familiar with social media and SMS does not enable a young person to contribute economically or work towards their potential.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In fact, being able to communicate digitally is only one of the five Basic Digital Skills: mastering Facebook and Instagram is no help in finding work. Learning one of the other five basic skills \u2013 creating documents of your own \u2013 is essential to job hunting though.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cInclusion means different things for different people. Everyone needs some ability in each of the five basic skills, but specific circumstances will dictate how much of each \u00a0skill someone needs.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-21071\" src=\"http:\/\/digileaders.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Lloyds_rachelneaman_infographic_v1.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"950\" height=\"1521\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lloydsbankinggroupdigital.com\/today-digital-inclusion-is-really-just-inclusion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14496 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/digileaders.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Lloyds_rachelneaman_infographic_v1.gif\" alt=\"Lloyds_rachelneaman_infographic_v1\" width=\"950\" height=\"1521\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Go ON UK is not a frontline charity \u2013 they are not on the street teaching digital skills. Instead they work with partner organisations \u2013 both private and public \u2013 to understand the real issues at play, and foster digital inclusion.\u00a0 Lloyds Banking Group is one of their Board partners \u2013 others include The Post Office, E.ON and TalkTalk. Go ON UK works closely with the Government but is not a part of Government.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cLloyds Banking Group has been a fantastic and seriously committed partner for us. Its research has been vital to our getting a picture of the state of digital inclusion in the UK \u2013 last year it looked closely at the digital state of Britain\u2019s SMEs and charities and this year its also publishing for the first time a report into the digital abilities of UK consumers.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Beyond giving Go ON UK a clearer picture of digital Britain, Lloyds Banking Group is helping the charity to establish the most practical, effective ways of reaching and teaching the excluded.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThere are two ongoing projects, one in Lewisham and one in Croydon, through which we\u2019re assessing techniques for giving basic digital skills to the people who need them. Lloyds Bank is giving us vital help. It has set up \u2018digital zones\u2019 in branches across both boroughs, where its Digital Champions are ready to offer help to anyone that needs it. We can\u2019t predict what uptake will be like following these projects, but regardless, it will give us valuable information about how best to reach different people.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Another project being powered by Lloyds Banking Group will see young people who are digitally capable but neither employed nor in any form of education or training teaming up with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe idea is for the business to draw on young people\u2019s digital skills, whilst the \u201capprentice\u201d gets a start in the employment market. A simple win-win.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There is one not entirely altruistic reason why organisations like Lloyds Banking Group see digital inclusion as such a crucial issue \u2013 as their operations become ever more digital, the last thing they want is for great swathes of the population to be left behind.<\/p>\n<p>What use is the bank, the Post Office or even the government if large numbers of people can\u2019t access them?<\/p>\n<p>Like the Government or the Post Office, Lloyds Banking Group is too big not to care about digital inclusion.<\/p>\n<p>But Lloyds Banking Group\u2019s\u00a0 \u2013 and other businesses\u2019 \u2013 \u00a0readiness to throw precious resources at digital inclusion owes something to their values too.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI\u2019ve experienced a genuine personal commitment from people at Lloyds Banking Group to our project \u2013 Miguel-\u00c1ngel Rodr\u00edguez-Sola (Group Director of Digital) sits on the board of Go ON UK and Nick Williams (Consumer Digital Director) and Leigh Smyth (Head of Group Digital Inclusion) are passionate leaders driving this agenda forward.
