Yesterday, Digital Leaders supported the\u00a0Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy\u00a0(BEIS) to host a Digital Day for the UK\u2019s 39 Growth Hubs.<\/p>\n
The morning focussed on digital strategies, the sharing of best practice and early stage successes experienced by Growth Hubs. Delegates heard\u00a0from the GFirst LEP on the early successes of the Digital High Street project currently being piloted in Gloucester, Stroud and Cheltenham. Then we heard from\u00a0the Greater Manchester Business Growth Hub about their\u00a0innovative \u201cGreater Connected” programme. The final keynote of this session was\u00a0the Black Country LEP sharing their experiences on the development of their online supply chain tool. After this,\u00a0there were\u00a0four breakout sessions hosted by BE Group, New Anglia LEP, London LEP and HMRC, all of which are using digital to improve their offer to their customers.<\/p>\n
The afternoon theme focussed on Collaborative Partnerships \u2013 \u201cInspiring Innovations and Ideas\u201d. We heard\u00a0from Intel who spoke\u00a0about the explosion in mobility and data and how this is already enabling the public and private sector to transform interactions with providers of services, customers and citizens. Then was Nominet who\u00a0used\u00a0their\u00a0research and insights to share how best to understand the drivers that help make it attractive and compelling for small local businesses to develop their digital skills and get online.\u00a0Microsoft also shared how in collaborating with Growth Hubs and LEPs, they are driving productivity, efficiencies to help connect to regional SMEs to help them grow. \u00a0And finally, Google\u2019s talk discussed how collaborative partnerships with a number of Growth Hubs and LEPs have\u00a0enabled them to offer their Google Digital Garage initiative through a number of city libraries and other locations.<\/p>\n
The final\u00a0three breakout sessions were from Axelos, highlighting the worrying and growing emergence of cyber-crime, Scale Up Institute, showcasing their scale up map and tool and\u00a0Do it Digital, who used their extensive campaign experience to\u00a0share advice, guidance and best practice on how best to mobilise and motivate a local\/regional community to get the most out of what a Growth Hub offers.<\/p>\n

We recognise the growing importance of the Growth Hub network and its vital work in supporting its regional SMEs to enable UK plc to continue its upward growth trajectory. However, the Growth Hub network needs support, with funding only committed by Government until 2018, Growth Hubs need to build collaborative and innovative solutions with the private sector and regional stakeholders that will provide not only a compelling proposition for the regional small business but also a commercial return for the Growth Hub that is sustainable over the longer term.
