There were lots of lessons for businesses and charities alike, and here\u2019s what we learned.<\/p>\n<p id=\"6cda\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">The theme of today is Digital Adoption &amp; Growth\u200a\u2014\u200aie Digital Transformation for UK industry.<\/p>\n<p id=\"32c5\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">First, a bit of context setting:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"postList\">\n<li id=\"72b7\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--p\"><a class=\"markup--anchor markup--li-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nominet.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"http:\/\/www.nominet.uk\">Nominet<\/a> run 10.5 million domain names.<\/li>\n<li id=\"e593\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">15.7 million people work in SMEs\u200a\u2014\u200aabout 60% of the private sector employment.<\/li>\n<li id=\"0dc2\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">38m people access the internet every day\u200a\u2014\u200aspending more time consuming media than they do sleeping.<\/li>\n<li id=\"1f8f\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">10m people in the UK don\u2019t have any basic skills.<\/li>\n<li id=\"5806\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--li-strong\">4.2m are sole proprietor businesses\u200a\u2014\u200a60% of SMEs\u200a\u2014\u200athis is the biggest opportunity as they are still largely under-represented across social and web.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li id=\"679c\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--li-strong\">30% of small businesses have no website\u200a\u2014\u200athose that are online on average grow 4 times as fast.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section-inner sectionLayout--outsetColumn\">\n<figure id=\"e0e0\" class=\"graf graf--figure graf--layoutOutsetCenter graf-after--li\" data-scroll=\"native\">\n<div class=\"aspectRatioPlaceholder is-locked\">\n<div class=\"progressiveMedia js-progressiveMedia graf-image is-canvasLoaded is-imageLoaded\" data-image-id=\"1*-JjKgm-XWRABkGPROhiixQ.png\" data-width=\"2266\" data-height=\"1430\" data-scroll=\"native\"><canvas class=\"progressiveMedia-canvas js-progressiveMedia-canvas\" width=\"75\" height=\"45\"><\/canvas><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"progressiveMedia-image js-progressiveMedia-image\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-images-1.medium.com\/max\/1000\/1*-JjKgm-XWRABkGPROhiixQ.png\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn-images-1.medium.com\/max\/1000\/1*-JjKgm-XWRABkGPROhiixQ.png\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"imageCaption\">Source: <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--figure-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/doteveryone.org.uk\/resources\/heatmap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/doteveryone.org.uk\/resources\/heatmap\/\">https:\/\/doteveryone.org.uk\/resources\/heatmap\/<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section-inner sectionLayout--insetColumn\">\n<h3 id=\"0eab\" class=\"graf graf--h3 graf-after--figure\"><a class=\"markup--anchor markup--h3-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/simondevonshire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/simondevonshire\">Simon Devonshire<\/a>, UK Government Entrepreneur in Residence and <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--h3-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/romanovsun\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/romanovsun\">Sacha Romanovitch<\/a><\/h3>\n<ul class=\"postList\">\n<li id=\"5e56\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--h3\">The last 5 years have been a golden period for headline digital growth with big organisations like Google, Amazon and Uber. A great example of a small business that couldn\u2019t have existed even 5 years ago.<\/li>\n<li id=\"5a05\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Jo Wicks is training 50,000 people everyday which wouldn\u2019t have been possible very recently.<\/li>\n<li id=\"87f5\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Many of the systems we still rely on are highly analogue. For example photocopying passports to get a bank account. Services such as <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--li-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yoti.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.yoti.com\/\">https:\/\/www.yoti.com\/<\/a> are trying to make these systems more digitally enabled and are crucial for progress.<\/li>\n<li id=\"0738\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">49% of businesses are not online\u200a\u2014\u200athis is not an accident, it is a specific decision they are making. There need to be new ways to compel them to get online. Up until this stage it\u2019s largely been about extolling the excitement of the new. I wonder if it\u2019s actually now down to using different tactics playing to the safety, risk and security of not being digital anymore, rather that trying to sell an exciting future. There are lots of different preferences and\u2026<\/em>medium.com<\/a><\/div>\n<ul class=\"postList\">\n<li id=\"5184\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--mixtapeEmbed\">Has the pace of change been too fast\u200a\u2014\u200aleaving lots of people behind without understanding and only fear?<\/li>\n<li id=\"5425\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">The <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--li-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lepnetwork.net\/growth-hubs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.lepnetwork.net\/growth-hubs\/\">39 local growth hubs<\/a> from the UK government have specific targets for getting digital into communities. They are however not being supported in the back end by a framework or shared infrastructure. This is the gap that government should be filling so that ideas can get into the real world sooner.<\/li>\n<li id=\"6743\" class=\"graf graf--li graf--startsWithDoubleQuote graf-after--li\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--li-strong\">\u201cShield of expertise\u201d\u200a\u2014\u200acan be a barrier to collaboration and slow progress when you get people in the room. We need to get better at avoiding the worry there isn\u2019t enough work to go round and genuinely work together to get good ideas to market. We need to grow up.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li id=\"e9a1\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--li-strong\">Our grandchildren will look at our era and be incredulous at the amount of data that we throw away. Why are we not monitoring our toilets for data that could help diagnose and track health problems.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"399a\" class=\"graf graf--h3 graf-after--li\">What Google are doing to help get organisations online:<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"postList\">\n<li id=\"461f\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--h3\">Google AdWords created \u00a311B of economic value last year. This is the reason that they care about getting people and businesses online.<\/li>\n<li id=\"22c7\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">By opening 7 physical <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--li-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/digitalgarage.withgoogle.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/digitalgarage.withgoogle.com\/\">Google Garages<\/a> across the UK, they have been getting out of the London and persuading small organisations of the benefits of getting online.<\/li>\n<li id=\"fc6e\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--li-strong\">In tandem to this, Google run an <\/strong><a class=\"markup--anchor markup--li-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/digitalgarage.withgoogle.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/digitalgarage.withgoogle.com\/\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--li-strong\">online Digital Garage course<\/strong><\/a><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--li-strong\"> which anyone can take up for free and cover the basics of digital marketing.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li id=\"81a4\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">After going through these courses, 9 out of 10 people made changes to the way they run their business. 65% had seen positive results and 10% had hired additional digital roles in the organisations.<\/li>\n<li id=\"e9a6\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">There is currently a natural skew towards young people who are running businesses, rather than the hard to reach traditional sole proprietors\u200a\u2014\u200athis is the next stage for Google and their garages.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section-inner sectionLayout--outsetColumn\">\n<figure id=\"08c8\" class=\"graf graf--figure graf--layoutOutsetCenter graf-after--li\" data-scroll=\"native\">\n<div class=\"aspectRatioPlaceholder is-locked\">\n<div class=\"progressiveMedia js-progressiveMedia graf-image is-canvasLoaded is-imageLoaded\" data-image-id=\"1*iWfhOdkujaE3qPFsyp1UJQ.jpeg\" data-width=\"3088\" data-height=\"2048\" data-is-featured=\"true\" data-action=\"zoom\" data-action-value=\"1*iWfhOdkujaE3qPFsyp1UJQ.jpeg\" data-scroll=\"native\"><canvas class=\"progressiveMedia-canvas js-progressiveMedia-canvas\" width=\"75\" height=\"47\"><\/canvas><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"progressiveMedia-image js-progressiveMedia-image aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-images-1.medium.com\/max\/1000\/1*iWfhOdkujaE3qPFsyp1UJQ.jpeg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn-images-1.medium.com\/max\/1000\/1*iWfhOdkujaE3qPFsyp1UJQ.jpeg\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section-inner sectionLayout--insetColumn\">\n<p id=\"305d\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--figure\">An example of adoption is the <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/berwickshellfish.com\/shop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"http:\/\/berwickshellfish.com\/shop\/\">Berwick Shellfish Company<\/a> who were enabled to move from being a trade only wholesaler to adding on an eCommerce business. In their first month they turned over \u00a36,000 and it\u2019s grown from there.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"c602\" class=\"graf graf--h3 graf-after--p\">How Samsung want to\u00a0help<\/h3>\n<blockquote id=\"2bd0\" class=\"graf graf--blockquote graf-after--h3\"><p>Small businesses have an opportunity because they don\u2019t have any legacy systems\u200a\u2014\u200awhich means they can get ahead of many of their larger competitors.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"5996\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--blockquote\">Organisations are increasingly seeing hardware as a commodity that can be swapped in and out\u200a\u2014\u200abut that the apps and digital tools they use are the strategic investment decisions that matter most.<\/p>\n<p id=\"5fae\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Flexible tools that can be swapped in and out with adaptive pricing models are what small organisations need. They have the hardware to use these in their pocket, but finding the right ones for them is the challenge.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7656\" class=\"graf graf--h3 graf-after--p\">What Mastercard are doing to help people do\u00a0business<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section-inner sectionLayout--outsetColumn\">\n<figure id=\"7df1\" class=\"graf graf--figure graf--layoutOutsetCenter graf-after--h3\" data-scroll=\"native\">\n<div class=\"aspectRatioPlaceholder is-locked\">\n<div class=\"progressiveMedia js-progressiveMedia graf-image is-canvasLoaded is-imageLoaded\" data-image-id=\"1*7sJ_x08bIs3KpNnJuvnUIg.png\" data-width=\"2880\" data-height=\"1516\" data-action=\"zoom\" data-action-value=\"1*7sJ_x08bIs3KpNnJuvnUIg.png\" data-scroll=\"native\"><canvas class=\"progressiveMedia-canvas js-progressiveMedia-canvas\" width=\"75\" height=\"37\"><\/canvas><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"progressiveMedia-image js-progressiveMedia-image aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-images-1.medium.com\/max\/1000\/1*7sJ_x08bIs3KpNnJuvnUIg.png\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn-images-1.medium.com\/max\/1000\/1*7sJ_x08bIs3KpNnJuvnUIg.png\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section-inner sectionLayout--insetColumn\">\n<p id=\"36e0\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--figure\">Mastercard see themselves as a payments technology company\u200a\u2014\u200acredit cards are only a small part of what they do. They are investing in tools and services that will enable all kinds of organisations that are currently not making the most of digital to generate value.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ca90\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Most organisations have multiple bank and operational interfaces combined with physical processes. Mastercard want to drive efficiences within this system.<\/p>\n<p id=\"0d9e\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">With their app, as Samsung are doing for technology, Mastercard are looking to create financial tools that are integrated across all of a business\u2019 needs, rather than needing separate apps for each type of experience.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"d001\" class=\"graf graf--h3 graf-after--p\">Examples of Inspiring, Innovative &amp; Collaborative Partnerships<\/h3>\n<h4 id=\"b6d5\" class=\"graf graf--h4 graf-after--h3\"><a class=\"markup--anchor markup--h4-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cgi-group.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.cgi-group.co.uk\/\">CGI<\/a> &amp; small business partnerships<\/h4>\n<p id=\"40f0\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h4\">CGI are consultants to government and industries where information is the key commodity. Their background has been working with large scale partners.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ce51\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">They have realised that moving forward, the cutting edge is going to be at the smaller end of the spectrum. The most exciting stuff is two or three people working round Silicon Roundabout rather than at Oracle. As such, they have started to build strategic partnerships with SMEs rather than acquiring a never ending set of tools.<\/p>\n<p id=\"37b5\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">The Cabinet Office has set a target of 25% of public sector contracts being spent with SMEs to go back into the UK economy.<\/p>\n<p id=\"df8a\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">By partnering with 500 of these SMEs, CGI get access to their technology whilst SMEs get access to CGI\u2019s scale, infrastructure and customers. This is much easier within start ups as they can chase a singular idea and test whether it\u2019s got legs in the real world. This isn\u2019t possible or efficient, in a large scale corporate environment.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"e9a8\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Reciprocal NDA + Ethical Code of Conduct + Credit Check are all the elements that they put on their SME partners.<\/p>\n<p id=\"727c\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Startups want to focus on a single industry rather than work across verticals. A digital healthcare app won\u2019t want to work in finance, even if their product might generate value and meet a similar need.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"ddf2\" class=\"graf graf--h4 graf-after--p\"><a class=\"markup--anchor markup--h4-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/ukcloud.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"http:\/\/ukcloud.com\/\">UKCloud<\/a> &amp; the UK Public\u00a0Sector<\/h4>\n<p id=\"122d\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h4\">Across the UK, large organisations supply to large organisations. SMEs can\u2019t do so and are left to supply other SMEs. Cloud services and its scalability are changing this to allow start ups to work with big big organisations.<\/p>\n<p id=\"de1b\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">One of the leading examples in this, is the UK government. 5 years there were 8 suppliers that had 80% of the government spend. Through the use of their <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalmarketplace.service.gov.uk\/g-cloud\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalmarketplace.service.gov.uk\/g-cloud\">G-cloud<\/a> platform, the government have drastically changed this in favour of startups and SMEs. It\u2019s still only at 30% of procurement spend though.<\/p>\n<p id=\"a562\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Challenges to adopting the cloud:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"postList\">\n<li id=\"261e\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--p\">Some suppliers are drastically opaque about their pricing\u200a\u2014\u200athe \u2018Ryanair model\u2019.<\/li>\n<li id=\"8ad5\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Security and location of servers are important and not always obvious.<\/li>\n<li id=\"4280\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">You can get locked in very quickly and without knowing it, making it hard to move applications between providers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"7c92\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--li\">When the cloud works well, it\u2019s able to bring small suppliers and organisations together on a common platform, to deliver big projects at speed and scale.
