The event followed visits to hunt kennels, a plant nursery and a chicken farm egg inspection on Thursday 12 January to see the challenges of technology in the field at first hand.<\/p>\n<p>Defra\u2019s Chief Operating Officer Betsy Bassis opened the event and she highlighted how important it is to improve the poor technology our people have to use so we can better serve our customers. She mentioned her own experience <a href=\"http:\/\/aphaintranet\/news-and-communications\/Pages\/CreatingadigitalDefra.aspx\">visiting a farm last year<\/a>, and how the visits the day before had reinforced the message.<\/p>\n<h5>What does this mean for Defra group?<\/h5>\n<p>Here are just some of the benefits:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No paper and clipboards<\/li>\n<li>Elimination of double\/triple entry of data from forms<\/li>\n<li>Consistent format of data for everyone to use<\/li>\n<li>More efficient resource planning and task allocation \u2013 helping to manage staff better.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_18658\" style=\"width: 342px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18658\" class=\"wp-image-18658\" src=\"http:\/\/digileaders.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Farm-Digital-Event-620x465.jpg\" width=\"332\" height=\"249\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-18658\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kirona presenting the new Defra Field Service Management Tool at the Farm Digital Event<\/p><\/div>\n<h5>There was a Field Service Management tool demo<\/h5>\n<p>The Field Service Management tool is an online resourcing tool that manages tasks for operations and allocating jobs to field staff. It works by looking at what tasks are available, checks calendars, location and nearest people, and then allocates work to the person best suitable for the job.<\/p>\n<h5>What does it mean for our customers?<\/h5>\n<p>Our services should improve customer service by making it easier for people\u00a0to do business with us. The aim is to have a 24\/7 Field Service Management System in place by mid-2018.<\/p>\n<h5>Embracing digital and data in the field<\/h5>\n<p>During the afternoon, the project team asked people to get into groups to look at issues and possible solutions followed by pitches on what innovative changes we could make. John Seglias, Kirsty Shaw and Betsy Bassis got together to discuss the ideas and pick one to take forward.<\/p>\n<p>There was a clear idea from two of the pitches \u2013 field staff really want hands free, voice activated system\u00a0that they can use to record details quickly in the field without having to duplicate work back in the office.
