Confessions of a former accessibility-denier"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With years of experience working in and around communications and digital projects, I would say that I\u2019ve got a stronger-than-average awareness that accessibility is An Important Thing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I always thought I had the main tenets of accessibility nailed, although had a bit of an epiphany while learning from the team at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.invotra.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Invotra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I spent some time reflecting on my own journey towards improving my understanding of accessibility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When giving fellow content and comms people some basic training about updating their content online, in the past it\u2019d go something along the lines of:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Alt text is important &#8211; imagine a screen reader reading your text!<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAlt text is like a description of the content. You know when you don&#8217;t download images in an email, and you get that tiny icon? Well, imagine you NEVER see pictures. That&#8217;s kind of the experience you get if you don&#8217;t put in the alt text.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Or worse: Alt text is a sneaky form of SEO<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou know how we, according to brand guidelines, only sell our secure solutions, we never sell manned guarding? Alt text can be a crafty way to make sure the content that people search for IS on the site. So of course, you can name that picture \u2018Security guard standing outside\u2019 or \u2018CCTV surveillance camera\u2019\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019d leave out any <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/webaim.org\/techniques\/alttext\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">complications about context<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making sure you have a clear description which reflects the same experience for all, or whether the picture really adds any value if someone can\u2019t see it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Avoid click here at all costs<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;d go on and do some sort of terrible impression of a screen-reader (I&#8217;d never heard one in action) to say avoid using just &#8220;click here&#8221; &#8211; I\u2019m still cringing thinking about it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Putting meaningful anchor text in hyperlinks is important. It\u2019s bad enough if you can see all of the context around the link. There&#8217;s a great excerpt on <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.clearbox.co.uk\/portfolio-item\/creating-intranet-content\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">writing better links<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Clearbox that I&#8217;ve shared in the past to help explain it far more eloquently<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I also discovered that you can turn on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/support.twitter.com\/articles\/20174660\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accessibility features on Twitter,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which gives you the ability to add alt text to your images.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Use captions and subtitles where possible.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;ve worked on lots of videos, and had managed to push to the back of my conscience that most did not include any sort of transcript. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I discovered some of the joys of Youtube\u2019s Closed Caption service, when reviewing <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=T1oVbxP1Oxk\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paul Zimmerman&#8217;s accessibility keynote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (where I first heard a screen reader in action, albeit slowed down) from the 2016 <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/intranetnow.co.uk\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intranet Now conference<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. (I should also point out that I have been disappointed in Vimeo&#8217;s apparent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/help.vimeo.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/224968828-Captions-and-subtitles\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lack of auto-captioning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> service).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There&#8217;s a great piece that explains more about <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/support.google.com\/youtube\/answer\/2734796?hl=en-GB\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how to add closed captions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Youtube. You&#8217;ll have more fun correcting variations on it than you&#8217;d think &#8211; thanks to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/oliloughran\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oli Loughran<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the heads up on that. I discovered that the Google audio closed-caption reader particularly struggled to understand the automated voice of the screen reader, creating its own AI-generated found poem.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Closed Captions vs Screenreader:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following plastics and secondly tactics<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expect notifications ship at that<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transactions that publicly shipshape.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>It\u2019s not somebody else\u2019s problem<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t assume it\u2019s an SEP* &#8211; ultimately, it\u2019s up to all of use to make our content as accessible as possible, and ask awkward questions of technology suppliers to make sure they have this covered. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;d like to think I&#8217;m improving in how I make content more accessible and love helping organisations <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/lisariemers.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improve the way they communicate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
