{"id":20945,"date":"2017-11-16T15:54:58","date_gmt":"2017-11-16T15:54:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/digileaders.com\/?p=20945"},"modified":"2018-09-17T16:15:35","modified_gmt":"2018-09-17T15:15:35","slug":"female-role-models-can-change-tech-better","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/digileaders.com\/female-role-models-can-change-tech-better\/","title":{"rendered":"More female role models can change tech for the better"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It is well accepted within the tech sector that there is a diversity crisis &#8211; the Harvard Business Review has <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2008\/06\/stopping-the-exodus-of-women-in-science\"><span class=\"s2\">acknowledged<\/span><\/a> that 50% of women working in STEM fields will eventually leave due to hostile work environments. The House of Lords has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.robertsoncooper.com\/good-daily-article\/1360-women-in-it-house-of-lords-has-a-better-diversity-profile-than-the-entire-tech-industry\"><span class=\"s2\">better<\/span><\/a> gender diversity profile than the entire tech industry and no major tech company has anything close to gender parity. With girls making up <a href=\"http:\/\/recruitingtimes.org\/recruitment-and-hr-technology-news\/21168\/tech-diversity-crisis-fewer-girls-took-computing-levels\/\"><span class=\"s2\">less than 10 per cent<\/span><\/a> of students taking A-level computing, it\u2019s hard to envisage radical change happening any time soon. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Despite some great conversations taking place, and a number of initiatives across the sector, there is no settled consensus on what to do to make it easier for women to feel at home working in tech. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Due to this lack of diversity, young people in the industry have a <a href=\"http:\/\/digileaders.com\/17-addressing-diversity-challenge-tech\/\">shortage of obvious female role models<\/a>.\u00a0 The world\u2019s first programmer, Ada Lovelace, was female but nowadays the likes of Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk etc.<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">are the face of an all-male industry.\u00a0 Through film, media and popular culture the industry is presented with an almost exclusively male identity, an Alpha Male culture involving burning the midnight oil and beers with the lads.\u00a0 This is off putting to many people and it\u2019s not surprising that women might think this isn\u2019t a career for them.\u00a0 After all, as tech entrepreneur Sherry Coutu, says, \u201cIf you can\u2019t see it, you can\u2019t be it.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">At a time when tech continues to reel from a crisis of sexism (see recent problems at Google, Uber, and UploadVR, for example), improving gender balance has added urgency. It may not be an easy shift, but having more women within the tech industry will ultimately create role models for aspiring generations of women looking for a challenging career.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s not just female aspirations that we can change through more prominent women in tech.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/business-functions\/organization\/our-insights\/why-diversity-matters\"><span class=\"s2\">Research shows<\/span><\/a> that greater gender diversity in senior executive teams in the UK helped companies on average increase earnings before interest and taxes by 3.5%. It is proven that diversity also improves productivity and creativity, makes better decisions and provides a more accurate representation of the customer base.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There is also plenty of research to demonstrate the transformative power of good role models.\u00a0 The Insights Behavioural Team, for example, has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.behaviouralinsights.co.uk\/education-and-skills\/more-evidence-on-the-power-of-role-models\/\"><span class=\"s2\">shown<\/span><\/a> how inspirational role models can change young people\u2019s beliefs and behaviours when it comes to their education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But if we\u2019re going to see more female role models in tech, we cannot just wait for Hollywood to announce a new biopic about a dynamic female tech CEO. Or for the next successful tech woman to appear on the front page of <a href=\"http:\/\/static1.businessinsider.com\/image\/5138c148ecad048c41000006-900-\/sheryl%2520sandberg%2520time%2520magazine%2520cover.jpg\"><span class=\"s2\">Time magazine<\/span><\/a> without being accompanied by the headline \u2018don\u2019t hate her because she\u2019s successful\u2019.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>We will have to be the change we wish to see in the workplace. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Breaking down a perception that tech is an exclusively male domain will need women working in tech to aspire to leadership positions, not just by emulating masculine traits, but by harnessing their own (often differing) strengths. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It will also require women to think differently about what their position means to those still weighing up whether this is a career for them. If you are a woman in tech now and don\u2019t have a role model, be a role model for others.\u00a0 If you are a leader (male or female), don\u2019t just look for successors in your own image, look for diversity to get the right blend of people that makes a stronger company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If we start thinking differently and change the way we look at things, we may just begin to see the change our industry desperately needs. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It is well accepted within the tech sector that there is a diversity crisis &#8211; the Harvard Business Review has acknowledged that 50% of women working in STEM fields will eventually leave due to hostile work environments.
