After reading up on the introduction to blockchain, you may be thinking:<\/p>\n<p id=\"886d\" class=\"graf graf--p graf--startsWithDoubleQuote graf-after--p\">\u201cBlockchain and Cryptocurrencies, another way to send and receive money, so what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"6846\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Previously, we mentioned that Bitcoin was an application of blockchain and now we look at the assumption that all Blockchain is just cryptocurrency:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"7234\" class=\"graf graf--p graf--startsWithDoubleQuote graf-after--p\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">\u201c[Blockchain] is to Bitcoin, what the internet is to email. A big electronic system, on top of which you can build applications. Currency is just one.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/daviesally\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/daviesally\">Sally Davies, FT Technology Reporter<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"887b\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Well, there are more applications for blockchain which are beneficial to everyone, especially those in developing countries. In particular, we will dissect Ethereum, the first decentralised application platform or \u201cdApp\u201d; just like you build an application on your smartphone, Ethereum allows other blockchain projects to be built on the Ethereum platform with ease.<\/p>\n<p id=\"de48\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Now, this sparks the new definition of the Crypto \u201cToken\u201d. A token is held within a Cryptographically designed blockchain, which can be used within its ecosystem; Ethereum allows you to use its token for utilities such as:<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ebf3\" class=\"graf graf--h3 graf-after--p\">Gas<\/h3>\n<p id=\"fa33\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h3\">Ethereum has an additional layer to its network in the form of smart contracts. In order to use these smart contracts, the participants of the network need fuel to power them. Gas has a flexible unit of measurement depending on how soon you require your transaction to be processed. There is a good analogy provided by the MyEtherWallet website:<\/p>\n<p id=\"f450\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">You can think of the\u00a0<code class=\"markup--code markup--p-code\">gas limit<\/code>\u00a0like the amount of litres\/gallons\/units of gas for a car. You can think of the\u00a0<code class=\"markup--code markup--p-code\">gas price<\/code>\u00a0as the cost of that litre\/gallon\/unit of gas.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"postList\">\n<li id=\"cf1e\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--p\">With a car, it\u2019s\u00a0<code class=\"markup--code markup--li-code\">$2.50 (price)<\/code>\u00a0per\u00a0<code class=\"markup--code markup--li-code\">gallon (unit)<\/code>.<\/li>\n<li id=\"758c\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">With Ethereum, it\u2019s\u00a0<code class=\"markup--code markup--li-code\">20 GWEI (price)<\/code>\u00a0per\u00a0<code class=\"markup--code markup--li-code\">gas (unit)<\/code>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"21ac\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--li\">To fill up your \u201ctank\u201d, it takes\u2026<\/p>\n<ul class=\"postList\">\n<li id=\"cc3f\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--p\"><code class=\"markup--code markup--li-code\">10 gallons<\/code>\u00a0at\u00a0<code class=\"markup--code markup--li-code\">$2.50<\/code>\u00a0=\u00a0<code class=\"markup--code markup--li-code\">$25<\/code><\/li>\n<li id=\"f970\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\"><code class=\"markup--code markup--li-code\">21000 units of gas<\/code>\u00a0at\u00a0<code class=\"markup--code markup--li-code\">20 GWEI<\/code>\u00a0=\u00a0<code class=\"markup--code markup--li-code\">0.00042 ETH<\/code>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"616e\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--li\">Therefore, the total TX fee will be 0.00042 Ether.<\/p>\n<p id=\"84d6\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Sending tokens will typically take\u00a0<code class=\"markup--code markup--p-code\">~50000<\/code>\u00a0gas to\u00a0<code class=\"markup--code markup--p-code\">~100000<\/code>\u00a0gas, so the total TX fee increases to\u00a0<code class=\"markup--code markup--p-code\">0.001 ETH - 0.002 ETH<\/code>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"044a\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/myetherwallet.github.io\/knowledge-base\/gas\/what-is-gas-ethereum.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/myetherwallet.github.io\/knowledge-base\/gas\/what-is-gas-ethereum.html\">https:\/\/myetherwallet.github.io\/knowledge-base\/gas\/what-is-gas-ethereum.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"406e\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p graf--trailing\">The role of Gas in the smart contract is to power each line of code, of which, packages are already publicly available for use across the network; Members of the network build packages or make their inputs freely available such that others can adapt and use it for their own work.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"section section--body\">\n<div class=\"section-divider\">\n<hr class=\"section-divider\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section-content\">\n<div class=\"section-inner sectionLayout--insetColumn\">\n<h3 id=\"695c\" class=\"graf graf--h3 graf--leading\">Unit of\u00a0transfer<\/h3>\n<p id=\"88a2\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h3 graf--trailing\">As time progressed and Ethereum looked to expand its utility, the token as a method of wealth transfer, has become more available and favourable during the high transaction fee attack in recent times. As some projects look to improve their transaction times by using off-chain transactions, Ethereum is looking to build on the dynamic sharding concept. Vitalik Buterin has recently announced his plans to launch Plasma Cash\u200a\u2014\u200aa hack resistant scaling solution.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"section section--body section--last\">\n<div class=\"section-divider\">\n<hr class=\"section-divider\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section-content\">\n<div class=\"section-inner sectionLayout--insetColumn\">\n<h3 id=\"b414\" class=\"graf graf--h3 graf--leading\">Smart Contract<\/h3>\n<p id=\"0253\" class=\"graf graf--p graf--startsWithDoubleQuote graf-after--h3\">\u201cA smart contract is a digitalised asset transfer, written in code on the Ethereum blockchain; the contract can virtually facilitate, enforce and verify an agreement which will activate when a set of conditions are fulfilled\u201d.<\/p>\n<p id=\"b235\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">It is essentially a programming script which only executes when all the conditions are met, for example, let\u2019s take a look at the details with a real-world example by Shivani Siroya.<\/p>\n<p id=\"f8b2\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">She highlights the credit scoring fundamentals used to assess whether an individual can be given a loan as third-party institutions do not have personal relationships with applicants. This is where smart contracts or smart loans can be used to improve the 2.5 billion people who cannot apply for credit.<\/p>\n<p id=\"0368\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">The smart loan contract can analyse mobile data through a mobile application and check whether the individual fulfils some of the following criteria:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"postList\">\n<li id=\"6fe8\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--p\">Does the individual make regular phone calls to friends and family?<\/li>\n<li id=\"4aec\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Does the individual have regular travel patterns?<\/li>\n<li id=\"1844\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Does the individual have a strong and diverse support network?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p id=\"a58b\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--li\">The smart loan analyses over 1,000 datapoints using mobile data to find incremental and big data trust points to approve loans.
