{"id":23483,"date":"2019-01-08T16:54:39","date_gmt":"2019-01-08T16:54:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/digileaders.com\/?p=23483"},"modified":"2019-01-10T14:34:29","modified_gmt":"2019-01-10T14:34:29","slug":"digital-service-enabler-not-solution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/digileaders.com\/digital-service-enabler-not-solution\/","title":{"rendered":"Why digital is a service enabler, not a service solution"},"content":{"rendered":"<ol>\n<li>Digital is underpinned by technology<\/li>\n<li>Both things (digital and technology) work together to form a\u00a0<b>part<\/b>\u00a0of a service.<\/li>\n<li>Services exist to help people do things \u2013 also known as a service\u00a0<b>outcome<\/b>*<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>*FYI service outcomes are usually based on a user need (i.e. user need = I need to eat, service outcome = person has food)<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, digital\u00a0<b>enables<\/b>\u00a0people to do things (i.e. reach their service outcome \u2013 the website helps someone order food because they need to eat).**<\/p>\n<p><b>That is very different to being a solution.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>** Digital doesn\u2019t do the actual physical delivery of the food (yet!) therefore it\u2019s only a\u00a0<b>part<\/b>\u00a0of the service \u2013 not the solution. The solution is the\u00a0<b>whole service<\/b>\u00a0that delivers the person food so that they can eat because the person\u00a0<b>needs<\/b>\u00a0to eat.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-23484\" src=\"https:\/\/digileaders.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180330_124336-1-e1522577142156-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"760\" height=\"413\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Why does this matter?<\/h4>\n<p>When we think of \u201cdigital solutions\u201d and only digital solutions, we forget the service that it is a part of and all of the micro-services that need to exist in order for a person to reach the service outcome. For example, the hiring process for chefs or training food delivery staff, logistics for taking an order and delivering it on time, taking payments etc etc.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s look at the diagram again with a bit more detail:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Digital is underpinned by technology<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Digital and technology are different. Technology is\u00a0<b>one<\/b>\u00a0component that enables digital to exist. Digital represents place, culture and lots of other things, and technology often is the power supply to bring it all together.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to distinguish between digital and technology, otherwise you can end up trying to redesign a digital output without fully understanding the technology that underpins it and that\u2019s a dangerous world to be in. Maybe I\u2019ll blog about it someday.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>Both things work together to form a part of a service.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The online or digital part of a service, is hardly ever the whole service. There\u2019s a before and an after someone uses something online and there\u2019s a whole bunch of things happening off of the screen (offline to some people) that is making that service exist. The online part of a service, usually only forms part of meeting the service outcome and meeting the user need.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the food ordering website places the food order. Great. But if the service didn\u2019t deliver the food, the person wouldn\u2019t eat.<\/p>\n<p>The whole service is getting the food. Part of the service is ordering the food online. Therefore the website plays a part in enabling the service, but the website isn\u2019t the solution to a user needing to eat.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>Services exist to help people do things \u2013 also known as a service\u00a0<b>outcome<\/b>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The reason that services, technology, and digital outputs exist at all is to help a person reach an outcome to meet a user need. That could be anything from getting food to winning a game. There\u2019s a reason why we\u2019re using a website or downloading an app.<\/p>\n<h4>In conclusion<\/h4>\n<p>So, when we say \u201clet\u2019s build an app for that\u201d or \u201cwe\u2019ll redesign the website, that\u2019ll sort it all out\u201d \u2013 we\u2019re forgetting why the service exists in the first place and we\u2019re losing sight of how a person\u00a0<b>needs<\/b>\u00a0to meet their goal.<\/p>\n<p>Neither an app or website digs deep enough into understanding the problem that you\u2019re trying to solve and that person needs.<\/p>\n<p>We end up taking people out of the equation.
