Mark <\/span>Owens, Managing Director, Civica Northern Ireland, discusses how <\/span>earlier <\/span>technology education and business involvement can prove a real boost to the nation\u2019s future digital workforce<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

The Chancellor Philip Hammond recently announced that education in Northern Ireland would receive a \u00a3300 million boost from the UK Government. This comes as a welcome relief to many as we continue to tackle <\/span>the issue of skilled IT <\/span>talent <\/span>moving away <\/span>to other parts of the <\/span>UK and the globe to <\/span>work<\/span>. M<\/span>eanwhile<\/span>, we cannot ignore the fact that<\/span> Brexit <\/span>may have a negative <\/span>impact<\/span> on<\/span> our pool of skilled employment<\/span> \u2013 which <\/span>could undermine <\/span>the nation\u2019s <\/span>competitiveness in an era of digital transformation. <\/span><\/p>\n

Northern Ireland is<\/span> currently<\/span> at a digital tipping point, with\u00a0proven technology experience, capacity and capability and <\/span>further UK government investment for a network of technology testbeds<\/span><\/a>.<\/span> Much <\/span>is <\/span>already <\/span>being done to drive <\/span>digital <\/span>transformation within Northern Ireland<\/span>; we see this every day in our work with public bodies across <\/span>the country <\/span>from government to health and social care trusts, social housing and the police and emergency services. <\/span><\/p>\n

However<\/span> to continue the great progress already underway, <\/span>t<\/span>here needs to be a stronger focus on education and continuing to <\/span>develop technology talent throughout the region<\/span> to ensure digital initiatives continue<\/span>.<\/span> T<\/span>hat\u2019s why it\u2019s crucial that the<\/span> new investment from government must be used to boost STEM skills<\/span>, harness innovation <\/span>and create initiatives to entice our young people to remain in Northern Ireland<\/span> and help form our new <\/span>digital identity<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

While we cannot <\/span>entirely predict what the future of work will look like <\/span>for our current primary school<\/span> cohort, <\/span>we know that there will be a strong reliance on digital technologies. The need to be digital and data-literate when entering the world of work will become vital for the economic and social prosperity of Northern Ireland, with digital skills at the heart of most<\/span>,<\/span> if not all<\/span>,<\/span> future jobs. Ensuring children are prepared for the digital age will be a shared challenge, with businesses, schools and universities alike <\/span>responsible for <\/span>promoting a fresh and innovative approach to digital learning. <\/span><\/p>\n

ICT should not be a siloed subject in<\/span> the<\/span> primary school curricula, but rather technology should be woven in to every aspect of modern education to help foster positive attitudes towards digital learning from an early age. Civica is engaging primary schools<\/span> in Northern Ireland through initiatives such as CoderDojo<\/span> and CodeIT<\/span> to <\/span>teach children <\/span>how to code, develop<\/span> apps and<\/span> programs, <\/span>as well as to <\/span>promote ICT as a<\/span>n aspirational career. <\/span>By educating young pupils about the importance of computational skills, we hope to help further align <\/span>education with the needs of modern businesses<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, there\u2019s a risk of overwhelming primary school children with complicated technical jargon, therefore we must be careful in the way we approach digital learning at an early age. Using practical, real-world examples will help young pupils better understand and appreciate the importance and prevalence of technology in society rather than seeing it as merely another academic subject<\/span>. F<\/span>or example<\/span>,<\/span> showing young pupils how an iPhone game works to encourage app development or using a SmartHome system to explain <\/span>the <\/span>I<\/span>nter<\/span>n<\/span>et <\/span>o<\/span>f <\/span>T<\/span>hings<\/span>. \u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

With a strong foundation of technical knowledge laid down in primary school, teenagers will be more inclined to pursue ICT education when they reach <\/span>secondary education<\/span>.<\/span> <\/a>D<\/span>igital <\/span>learning<\/span> should be even more centred around real-world<\/span>,<\/span> work-ready scenarios<\/span> in high schools and colleges so that <\/span>once young people reach university they have a solid <\/span>and diverse <\/span>digital skillset, which could be applied to further learning or in a work-related setting<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Businesses like Civica are helping <\/span>boost <\/span>Northern Ireland\u2019s <\/span>ICT skills base <\/span>by offering students a scholarship package which combines university knowledge and hands-on business experience. S<\/span>upported by Queen’s University Belfast and Ulster University<\/span>, <\/span>our<\/span> scholarship programme offers students a bursary as well as paid summer and industrial placements to complement their undergraduate degree and help fast track their career in the digital space. There is an obvious opportunity here for businesses to play a greater role in supporting the career development at local universities, whilst also plugging skills gaps within their own workforce. <\/span>Not only <\/span>is this<\/span> a great way of retaining the best IT talent <\/span>in Northern Ireland, but we<\/span>\u2019ve also <\/span>found that the majority of young people who come to work for us during their st<\/span>udies return after graduating. <\/span><\/p>\n

Whilst schools and colleges have a responsibility to equip young people with the necessary skills to thrive in the digital workplace, businesses must also play their part in training and retaining talent to continue driving innovation. With rising university fees and looming Brexit uncertainty, we must harness the digital skills of the next generation\u2013 <\/span>as they are the key to providing a steady stream of talent for tech companies in the region to continue the great work being done in the digital space. Only by encouraging young people to stay within education and develop the technology skills required for tomorrow, <\/span>can <\/span>we ensure that Northern Ireland <\/span>continues along its p<\/span>ath to become<\/span> a<\/span> digital leader<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n
