{"id":24781,"date":"2019-01-03T15:55:29","date_gmt":"2019-01-03T15:55:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/digileaders.com\/?p=24781"},"modified":"2019-01-03T16:02:42","modified_gmt":"2019-01-03T16:02:42","slug":"looking-to-the-future-in-dwp-digital","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/digileaders.com\/looking-to-the-future-in-dwp-digital\/","title":{"rendered":"Looking to the future in DWP Digital"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s5\">Author Simon McKinnon, I<\/span><span class=\"s5\">nterim Chief Digital and Information Officer<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s5\">As <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Mayank<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> Prakash departs DWP Digital after 4 years of leading our digital transformation, I\u2019m deligh<\/span><span class=\"s5\">ted to be taking up the reins as interim CDIO<\/span><span class=\"s5\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s5\">For those who don\u2019t know me, I\u2019m Simon McKinnon and I previously headed up the digital delivery of Children, Health and Pensions Services. This is the team which has built a number of digital services including Check your State Pension, Carer\u2019s Allowance and Send Your Fit Note. For example, more than 10 million State Pension forecasts have been checked online by people thinking about their retirement. We\u2019re making it simpler, easier and faster for them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"s7\"><span class=\"s6\">Looking to the future<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s5\">It\u2019s a really exciting time for digital in government as we accelerate our use of technology to improve the services we provide for the people who need them most.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s5\">And in DWP Digital we\u2019ve got all the necessary foundations in place to successfully deliver our digital transformation ambitions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s5\">For me, the number one component to this success is the skills, commitment and enthusiasm of our colleagues. I\u2019m inspired every day by watching great teams work together to solve problems creatively, truly motivated by the important underlying cause of their work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s5\">Backed up by our world-class service management, cutting-edge technology, and amazing data and information resources, we have a proven ability to deliver.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s5\">Under <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Mayank\u2019s<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> leadership, we fundamentally changed our ambition, our ways of working and our capabilities in DWP Digital \u2013 a legacy I\u2019m grateful for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s5\">Previously most of our technology services were provided by third party suppliers within tightly constrained contracts which made it very difficult for us to meet our users\u2019 needs.\u00a0 The accountability for these services has now been brought back into the department enabling us to reduce our costs and make necessary investments to reduce technical debt, improve existing services and deliver new digital ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s5\">We\u2019ve invested in our people\u2019s capability by launching communities of practice where colleagues can share knowledge and learn from each other.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s5\">And we\u2019ve adopted agile methods to meet user needs, design thinking to make us more innovative and a DevOps culture to enable us to break down traditional organisation barriers within technology functions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s5\">We now need to continue to improve the services we provide, build closer relationships with our colleagues across the department, and drive through the digitisation of DWP\u2019s services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s5\">Each of our functions in the organisation have some a<\/span><span class=\"s5\">mazing plans for 2019<\/span><span class=\"s5\">.\u00a0 At the moment, I\u2019m particularly excited about the work we\u2019re doing on Trust and assuring someone\u2019s digital identity. This isn\u2019t solely about one-time verification of credentials. It is about proportionality. It is about continuous authentication. It is about building a holistic understanding of digital personas and intelligent real-time decision-making for every transaction, based on context and behaviours and building Trust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s5\">We\u2019re continuing to explore how we can use Artificial Intelligence in some exciting <\/span><span class=\"s5\">ways, and<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> finding new ways to exploit our data to make things easier for our customers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s5\">And we need to take advantage of the data that we hold in DWP and can access from other departments to build better solutions.
