Culture secretary Jeremy Wright confirmed the partnership in a speech today setting out a package of measures to help grow UK tech for social purpose. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DigitalAgenda\u2019s<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.impact-awards.co.uk\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Impact Awards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, now in their third year, have official government support. Jeremy Wright, secretary of state for digital, culture, media and sport, confirmed his department\u2019s backing for our tech-for-good programme in a speech today at London\u2019s British Library, that set out government plans to support UK social technology in the year ahead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Addressing the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doteveryone.org.uk\/responsible-tech-2019\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doteveryone Responsible Tec<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">h event, Wright said: \u201cI am proud that we will be supporting this year\u2019s DigitalAgenda Impact Awards as its official government partner. These awards, taking place in London on 7 March, will showcase the best innovations in responsible \u2018tech for good\u2019 from across UK businesses, government and non-profits.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The government\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/digital-revolution-to-use-the-power-of-data-to-combat-illegal-wildlife-trade-and-reduce-food-waste\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wider support for tech for good outlined today<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> promises \u201cmeasures to spark a wave of innovation in tech for social good\u201d. These include \u00a3700,000 in support and mentoring for projects that deploy artificial intelligence to address challenges such as food waste and the illegal wildlife trade, as part of a world-first &#8216;data trust&#8217; programme. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also promised in the government\u2019s measures is a new partnership with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/socialtechtrust.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social Tech Trust<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to establish a fund of up to \u00a330m to provide \u201caccess to finance and position the UK as a global leader in socially transformative tech\u201d. A further \u00a31m is being made available to \u201cincentivise organisations to use tech to help tackle loneliness and bring communities together\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Impact Awards partnership brings DCMS into DigitalAgenda\u2019s programme, adding its expertise to our judging process, as well as to our support programme for tech-for-good ventures across the year. That programme will back the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.impact-awards.co.uk\/finalists\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">36 projects named this week as 2019 finalists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through a range of network learning activities over the course of the year covering tech development, talent and investment. Those are the three key areas where for-good ventures have told us they need most support. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his speech today, Wright added: \u201cTechnology is already making our lives easier in many ways but there is still so much untapped potential that we can deliver for social good. As a world leader in emerging technologies, the UK is best placed to foster these opportunities. The new policies announced today, backed by new funding, will encourage industry to deliver technological innovation to address issues as diverse as animal poaching, food waste and loneliness.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The programme outlined today echoes sentiments from government\u2019s most senior civil servant on digital, Matthew Gould, when he addressed 2018\u2019s Impact Awards event, urging digital innovators to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/digitalagenda-audio\/impact-awards-2018-matthew-gould\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">do more with technology for positive social change, to win back public trust in technology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 2019 Impact Awards headline sponsor is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nominet.uk\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nominet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Responding to the secretary of state\u2019s announcement, chief executive Russell Haworth said: \u201cWe welcome the minister\u2019s commitment to \u00a0promoting tech for good, and his support for showcasing projects leading the charge through these awards.
