It\u2019s not surprising then that large organisations everywhere are looking at different ways to foster new ideas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An innovation lab is a tool we\u2019re seeing used extensively in both the public and private sectors with a recent study finding that 89% of respondents that had an innovation programme had put in place an innovation lab.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>What is an innovation lab?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re not familiar with an innovation lab, you may be forgiven for asking exactly what it involves, especially for a government department like ours where there\u2019s a huge amount of innovation happening throughout the organisation already.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Put simply, it\u2019s \u2018a framework for rapidly generating ideas and turning them into value within the organisation\u2019. Alongside this, I believe that an innovation lab should also aim to achieve the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bring diverse and external thinking into the business<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018hothouse\u2019 new solutions, generating ideas and turning them into value<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">incubate a culture of innovation throughout the organisation<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simon King, Head of User Centred Design draws on his experience setting up DWP\u2019s Innovation Lab. Alongside this, I believe that an innovation lab should also aim to achieve the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bring diverse and external thinking into the business<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018hothouse\u2019 new solutions, generating ideas and turning them into value<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">incubate a culture of innovation throughout the organisation<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having worked in ventures, start-ups and setting up innovation labs in the private sector, establishing DWP\u2019s Innovation Lab when I joined the department at the start of 2020 represented a new set of challenges as well as opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last September I spoke at the Digital Government Conference about innovation and the experience we had setting up the DWP Innovation Lab.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the talk I outlined 8 \u2018rules\u2019 for anyone looking to go through a similar process or looking to add more innovative thinking to their business or department.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Our innovation eBook<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve used those 8 rules as the inspiration for an<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/careers.dwp.gov.uk\/principles-innovation-ebook\/?utm_source=digital_leaders&amp;utm_medium=news&amp;utm_campaign=innovation_ebook\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> eBook on innovation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that we\u2019re now offering to anyone to download and enjoy.
