It\u2019s been an inspiring year for women in STEM<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0Kate Bigham, chai<\/span>r<\/span>\u00a0of the UK\u2019s Vaccine Taskforce<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0alongside her team<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>developed<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>w<\/span>hat has been one of the world\u2019s most impressive deployment strategies<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>She studied biochemistry at university and has worked as a venture capitalist for many years<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>bringing a\u00a0<\/span>science background and business acumen<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to the challenge.\u00a0<\/span>Meanwhil<\/span>e<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0Professor Sarah Gilbert,\u00a0<\/span>Professor of Vaccinology at Oxford University<\/span>, spear<\/span>head<\/span>ed\u00a0<\/span>the team that delivered the Astra Zeneca\/Oxford vaccine in record time<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>I hope th<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0achievement<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0and impact of<\/span>\u00a0both of these women<\/span>\u00a0sends a clear message out to girls everywhere: don\u2019t let anyone tell you STEM\u00a0<\/span>i<\/span>s\u00a0<\/span>not for<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>everyone<\/span>, or that it can\u2019t be a thrilling career<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This message matters even more in the tech sector because gender diversity is poor<\/span>, despite the fact we are building digital solutions for everyone.\u00a0<\/span>At Nominet we work hard to try and tackle this diversity issue. One simple approach is to<\/span>\u00a0draw attention to the potential of a tech career for women<\/span>\u00a0via<\/span>\u00a0a series of profiles on our blog<\/span>, shining a light on our own \u2018women in tech\u2019 to show how<\/span>\u00a0diverse they are and how different their career paths have been. A technology career can offer something for everyone.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Consider\u00a0<\/span>Jul<\/span>iette<\/span>\u00a0Dalitz, Head of Audit and Risk<\/span><\/a>,<\/span>\u00a0who has<\/span>\u00a0been with Nominet almost 24 years<\/span>\u00a0and yet had no childhood interest in computers nor any career plans<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0She applied to join us purely for an adventure (she moved from Scotland to Oxford for the role) and some much-needed post-university income.\u00a0<\/span>She has stayed because, for her, \u201c<\/span>technology is\u00a0<\/span>completely fascinating<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0constantly reinventing itself<\/span>\u201d.<\/span>\u00a0Juliette u<\/span>rges young people not\u00a0<\/span>to assume<\/span>\u00a0the tech sector\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>is only fun for coders and programmers<\/span>\u201d<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0She is neither.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nor is<\/span>\u00a0Business Analyst\u00a0<\/span>Emma Duncan<\/span><\/a>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>who finds her fascination in the way technology can be used to improve the outcomes for a business. She studied\u00a0<\/span>Business Systems\u00a0<\/span>Design\u00a0<\/span>at university and<\/span>, upon joining the sector, was surprised by \u201c<\/span>how many different jobs there are,\u201d she says, declaring that the industry would appeal to \u201canyone\u00a0<\/span>who<\/span>\u00a0enjoys understanding how things work.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It can also appeal to someone who loves fashion \u2013 the two are not mutually exclusive, argues\u00a0<\/span>April\u00a0<\/span>Forsyth<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>Head of Product (Registry). \u201cWho says you can\u2019t love technology and have a fabulous shoe collection?\u201d she asks. That being said,\u00a0<\/span>April<\/span>\u00a0was a student who got hooked on IT and computing at school and\u00a0<\/span>became<\/span>\u00a0the first from\u00a0<\/span>her\u00a0<\/span>all-girls institution to take\u00a0<\/span>the subject at degree level; she studied Information Systems and has worked in the sector ever since. She particular relishes that she has become \u2018something of a domain name specialist\u2019 and\u00a0<\/span>confesses<\/span>\u00a0that, f<\/span>our year<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0into her job at Nominet<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0she still\u00a0<\/span>get<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>a nerdy satisfaction from knowing how crucial Nominet is to the internet and that the work I do has an impact on the future of the .UK domain<\/span>\u201d.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While many of our women moved straight into industry after their education, we\u00a0<\/span>have also\u00a0<\/span>gained some incredible talent from academia<\/span>, bringing Nominet a more specialist skillset.\u00a0<\/span>Jelena Ilic,<\/span>\u00a0our R<\/span>esearch and\u00a0<\/span>D<\/span>ata\u00a0<\/span>S<\/span>cience\u00a0<\/span>L<\/span>ead<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>spent most of her career\u00a0<\/span>immersed i<\/span>n experimental particle physics<\/span>, seeking work in industry<\/span>\u00a0when she had her family<\/span>, as it meant less<\/span>\u00a0travelling<\/span>. She\u00a0<\/span>was<\/span>\u00a0surprise<\/span>d to discover how poor\u00a0<\/span>the UK\u2019s STEM diversity\u00a0<\/span>ratios\u00a0<\/span>are<\/span>; growing up in what is now Montenegro, she was never in the minority when studying<\/span>\u00a0sciences. \u201cW<\/span>hy should my gender have anything to do with me studying physics?<\/span>\u201d she asks, \u201cw<\/span>e have to change whatever is putting young girls off studying fascinating subjects like physics and maths in the UK and encourage more talented women into technology; it\u2019s the future<\/span>\u201d.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Family reasons also moved\u00a0<\/span>Uzma<\/span>\u00a0Khan, Java Developer<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>out of academia<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0After earning\u00a0<\/span>a degree and a masters in Computer Science<\/span>, she worked for many years as a lecturer before\u00a0<\/span>moving<\/span>\u00a0to the UK to marry and start a family.\u00a0<\/span>When re-joining the workforce,\u00a0<\/span>she was pleasantly surprised that her experience was valuable<\/span>\u00a0in the private sector<\/span>\u00a0\u2013 and to find work that fulfilled<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>I certainly get great pleasure in my work,<\/span>\u201d she says, \u201c<\/span>but what also matters to me is being a role model for my daughter, showing her that you can be a mother and have a career, not least a career in tech<\/span>.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Her daughter will also hopefully re<\/span>cognise\u00a0<\/span>that she doesn\u2019t have to be a Java Developer like her mum<\/span>, or even be that keen on programming. The tech sector has an\u00a0<\/span>incredibly broad range of roles\u00a0<\/span>that are directly shaping our digital future \u2013 simply bring your talent and you will find your niche<\/span><\/p>\n
