The\u00a0Tech For Our Planet challenge<\/span><\/a>, which was part of COP26, showcased how innovative data-driven solutions can make a vital contribution to our efforts to combat climate change across all sectors. We saw innovators using data and artificial intelligence (AI) to\u00a0<\/span>make\u00a0commercial buildings smarter and more efficient<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and create the world\u2019s\u00a0largest\u00a0database on insect biodiversity,<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to map impacts of agrochemicals and target conservation effort<\/span>s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At COP26, we also saw the Office for National Statistics launch a new portal for\u00a0data and insights\u00a0<\/span><\/a>on climate change. This portal, which is part of the\u00a0Integrated Data Service,<\/span><\/a>\u00a0will allow us to accurately monitor and assess our progress towards Net Zero.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, last week saw the final of the\u00a0UK\u2019s Civil Service Data Challenge<\/span><\/a>. The winning project, led by Natural England, proposed a\u00a0novel way of utilising artificial intelligence to support peatland restoration<\/span><\/a>. The prize money will go towards ensuring this innovative approach can both support the UK\u2019s net zero goals and reduce flood risk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These sorts of initiatives will be crucial in both supporting and monitoring the UK\u2019s transition to Net Zero. The one thing they have in common?\u00a0They all rely on the better use of data<\/b>. The\u00a0National Data Strategy<\/span><\/a>\u00a0sets out the UK\u2019s plan to further unlock the power of data to tackle a range of challenges including climate change.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What we\u2019ve heard<\/span><\/h3>\n

Respondents to the consultation on the National Data Strategy identified both an opportunity and a responsibility for the National Data Strategy to explore how data can support a greener, more sustainable economy. Existing digital technologies<\/span>\u00a0could help cut 15% of UK emissions by 2030<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0At the same time, we need to consider the environmental impact of increased data use, including the carbon emissions generated by data centres. The\u00a0Government Response<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to the National Data Strategy outlined some of the steps we\u2019re taking to use data more effectively in pursuit of Net Zero.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Exploring Net Zero through the National Data Strategy Forum<\/span><\/h3>\n

Earlier this year, we launched a\u00a0National Data Strategy Forum\u00a0<\/span><\/a>workstream focused on understanding how we can best harness the power of data to meet our climate goals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On 21 October, alongside techUK, the Minister of State for Media, Data and Digital Infrastructure, Julia Lopez MP, co-hosted the first event of this workstream. It invited the data centre community to share the sector\u2019s progress towards Net Zero and the challenges they face going forward. The sector explained the steps they\u2019re taking to reduce emissions, and updated us on their progress made to date through initiatives such as\u00a0the Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

We shared the actions government is taking to reduce its own ICT carbon footprint through t<\/span>he\u00a0Greening Government:\u00a0ICT & Digital Services Strategy 2020-2025<\/span><\/a>, which seeks to develop the transparency and accountability needed to reduce carbon emissions and costs associated with government procurement. We are also embedding\u00a0sustainability as a key decision point<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and principle for the design and approval of government-owned digital systems and services, as well as in our central procurement frameworks such as the cloud.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Next steps: Join us for the Data & Net Zero workshop<\/span><\/h3>\n

Following our learnings from the first event, we\u2019re running a workshop in partnership with the Royal Society on\u00a0<\/span>21<\/span>\u00a0January 2022. This workshop chaired by\u00a0<\/span>Baroness Brown, Julia King,<\/span>\u00a0will be an opportunity to showcase best-practice<\/span>\u00a0initiatives\u00a0<\/b>where data is being used to support Net Zero and will help us identify the barriers that are preventing different<\/span>\u00a0sectors from making the most of data in their own plans for reducing energy use and emissions.\u00a0<\/span>Following the session, participants should have a better understanding of how to be data ready in pursuit of Net Zero.\u00a0<\/span>If you are interested in participating, please email: <\/span>ndsforumsecretariat@dcms.gov.uk<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n
