We have plenty of tips to save energy in our homes, but what about the workplace?\u00a0 Can we do more to reduce the amount of energy we use? We all know that at home, we should unplug devices when not in use, reduce water consumption, keep the thermostat at low temperatures and do a bit of batch cooking while the oven\u2019s on.<\/p>\n

But what about the workplace?\u00a0 Are there simple tips that we could all take on board to reduce the energy used in the workplace?<\/p>\n

Back in June I shared a blog post about Digital Leaders Week and what I\u2019d learnt over the course of the week.\u00a0 One of my personal highlights was\u00a0a session on Tech Net Zero with my colleague Cory Hughes<\/a>.\u00a0 This was one of a number of talks focused on \u2018Green Tech\u2019 that, along with getting me thinking about tech net zero, organisations and green tech, shared some great tips on saving energy in the workplace.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

So what are these tips?<\/h3>\n

At this point, I give credit to\u00a0Danny Weston<\/a>\u00a0,\u00a0James Cannings<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Cory Hughes<\/a>, who shared most of these during their Green Tech talks in Digital Leaders Week.<\/p>\n

At Perago we often structure roadmaps for change using a \u2018now\u2019 \u2018next\u2019 and \u2018later approach\u2019.\u00a0 It\u2019s a way to initially plans change and break it down into manageable chunks without getting too hung up on dates. I\u2019ve looked at these tips in the same way, what you can do now, what you should then consider and finally the actions you can pick up in the longer term.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Top tips in the workplace<\/h3>\n

Now (we can take as individuals)<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Bookmark pages that you use frequently, don\u2019t use search engines every time<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
      \n
    1. Send less e-mails. If everyone in the UK sent one less \u2018thank you\u2019 e-mail per day \u2013 it could save 16,433 tonnes of carbon each year<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
        \n
      1. Data centres consume about 3% of the world\u2019s electricity \u2013 delete unnecessary data and keep archive files, images and videos offline.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
          \n
        1. Send large files via a link rather than e-mail<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
            \n
          1. If your laptop is charged, disconnect the power until you need to charge it again rather than leaving it plugged in to prolong the battery life<\/li>\n
          2. Use a Website Carbon Calculator to calculate the carbon used by your website \u2013\u00a0https:\/\/www.websitecarbon.com\/<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

             <\/p>\n

            Next (relevant to people responsible for websites)<\/h3>\n
              \n
            1. Do an audit of your website using Google Analytics and assess if some pages have very low viewings. Could you reduce the number of pages on your website?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                \n
              1. Use WebP images files rather than .jpeg or .png, and reduce the number of videos and images on websites<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                  \n
                1. Consider the amount of steps in the user journey \u2013 halving the steps in the user journey will half the carbon footprint<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                    \n
                  1. Consider the amount of data on a page \u2013 halving the page weight on websites will half the carbon footprint<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                     <\/p>\n

                    The later<\/h3>\n

                    We also need to look at the long term, strategic steps that should be considered. They may require the support of other people or financial support or long term strategies.<\/p>\n

                    Cory discussed some of them in her session during DL Week and will be sharing more in our next blog post.<\/p>\n
