Digital transformation is a\u00a0wide-stretching topic,\u00a0and\u00a0one where the picture\u00a0vastly differs\u00a0depending on the\u00a0institution. Engagement analytics\u00a0is a\u00a0seemingly\u00a0small\u00a0component\u00a0that\u00a0fits\u00a0into the\u00a0larger digital picture\u00a0but is an essential\u00a0tool\u00a0helping\u00a0universities\u00a0to\u00a0improve student success, enhance teaching and learning, inform curriculum\u00a0design\u00a0and\u00a0create\u00a0the\u00a0best\u00a0student experience.\u00a0To engage students is to help maximise their potential, but\u00a0to\u00a0achieve this, institutions need to ensure they are focused on the outcomes of their students.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

There are\u00a0many\u00a0universities\u00a0who\u00a0have\u00a0explored\u00a0educational technologies\u00a0to enhance in-person learning, yet there is still a way to go in terms of adopting a digital mindset\u00a0with data\u00a0that can result in\u00a0achieving\u00a0the best\u00a0result\u00a0possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Using the\u00a0data\u00a0we already have\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

The data that already\u00a0exists in\u00a0a\u00a0university and\u00a0is created every single day\u00a0is the most\u00a0accurate\u00a0evidence of how students are receiving and engaging with their\u00a0studies. It tells us\u00a0where they may be struggling, and where further\u00a0support could be\u00a0needed. While this\u00a0wealth of data\u00a0is often\u00a0overwhelming, it can be streamlined into accessible\u00a0information which can feed into a wider engagement strategy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

One university that\u00a0is\u00a0exploring the\u00a0strategic value\u00a0of data-informed\u00a0decision making\u00a0is The University of Essex.\u00a0It\u00a0is been\u00a0adapting its approach\u00a0in\u00a0line with its\u00a0education\u00a0strategy\u00a0which focuses on ensuring success and good wellbeing\u00a0for\u00a0students.\u00a0Implementing\u00a0learning analytics\u00a0through\u00a0StREAM,\u00a0Solutionpath\u2019s\u00a0Student Engagement Analytics Platform, \u2013\u00a0known as\u00a0LEAP (Learner Engagement Analytics Portal)\u00a0at the institution,\u00a0it\u00a0can now\u00a0gather data on the engagement and attendance of\u00a0its\u00a0students\u00a0and\u00a0support the wider strategic development of the education offered,\u00a0as well as offer\u00a0help and guidance\u00a0for those at risk of early withdrawal.\u00a0Richard Stock, Academic Registrar at the University of Essex,\u00a0says that\u00a0data\u00a0is \u201cplaying an increasingly important part in our ambitions\u201d and\u00a0explains\u00a0that part of the\u00a0University\u2019s\u00a0education strategy is \u201cthe responsible use of data as a tool\u00a0for\u00a0development, wellbeing and success\u201d for\u00a0students.\u00a0The University\u00a0has\u00a0gained a wealth of insight that has been\u00a0pivotal for designing student support to tackle critical\u00a0spots\u00a0throughout\u00a0the students\u2019\u00a0learning journey, while also adhering\u00a0to its\u00a0approach to induction and transition activities to increase retention in the first few months of a course.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Starting small and progressing at a pace that suits your\u00a0strategy\u00a0can enable more effective\u00a0outcomes. However, such strategies need to be suitable for the long-term and grow with the ever-changing landscape of technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Teesside University\u00a0started\u00a0integrating\u00a0engagement analytics as the Covid lockdown began\u00a0and quickly realised the\u00a0important role\u00a0analytics\u00a0play\u00a0in the wider transformation picture, enabling\u00a0the\u00a0University\u00a0to\u00a0identify\u00a0students who were engaging with\u00a0their\u00a0studies.\u00a0Mark Simpson, Pro Vice-Chancellor at\u00a0Teesside University, says \u201cOur future-facing learning strategy has been used to drive\u00a0significant change\u00a0within our organisation. This includes how we will help our students to become globally connected, ethically engaged and digital empowered.\u201d As illustrated by Simpson, a future-focused stance adopted by the institution can accelerate the positive change needed to help students feel as if they are getting the most out of all aspects of their education.\u00a0Teesside has\u00a0now progressed to revising\u00a0its\u00a0approach to personal tutoring by\u00a0creating\u00a0a central student success team, allowing the\u00a0University to effectively\u00a0identify\u00a0issues among students and\u00a0provide\u00a0an intervention to support.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Developing a\u00a0transparent\u00a0analytics\u00a0environment\u00a0<\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

You\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0have successful student analytics and future-thinking strategies without\u00a0deep\u00a0consideration of who makes up your student population. Data is more than technology and figures \u2013\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0people and culture. This means developing a\u00a0transparent\u00a0analytics\u00a0environment where\u00a0students\u00a0have a clear understanding of how their data will be used\u00a0solely for the purposes of\u00a0supporting their academic success\u00a0and\u00a0can access the same data as staff,\u00a0giving them the freedom to use technologies that will help them gain perspective on their own learning journey.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Engagement analytics is a vital aspect of building a solid relationship between\u00a0the staff\u00a0providing\u00a0intervention support\u00a0and students, who can use this data to create a detailed picture of an individual student and work in collaboration to create a unique roadmap of development. Andy Ramsden, Director of Technology Enhanced Learning & Teaching and Learning Analytics at The University of Law, highlights that \u201cA\u00a0key pillar within data strategy is people development\u201d.\u00a0In other words,\u00a0all data analysis is set out to point back to how best to maximise student development.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Students need to be involved in the digital transformation of their own university, as the deployment and development of technology is primarily for the benefit of themselves. This means having an engagement analytics platform that clearly outlines their behaviour and progress in a simple dashboard with easy-to-understand measurement insights. Helping students grasp the data behind their engagement allows for more meaningful conversations to take place with their tutors and empower them to take their next steps. Ramsden further notes \u201cFor all people, staff and students, to take ownership of the data they need to be comfortable with seeing stories through the data.\u201d The data needs to be presented in a way that is more than just numbers, but a detailed report that strongly ties back into the student\u2019s own life.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

By having students fully on-board with their university\u2019s digital strategy, including the use of their data, a culture of transparency is\u00a0established, allowing valuable conversations to occur and real change to be seen.<\/span><\/p>\n
