We all know it. But while attack vectors are evolving by the minute, our security budgets are barely inching forward. This disconnect is creating a dangerous vulnerability, particularly with the rise of human-manipulation fraud, like AI-enabled deepfake. It is no longer just something that happens to celebrities. It is now an everyday reality, and a boardroom problem. My work in biometric security working with the public and private sector, has given me an insider\u2019s view of how devastating it can be.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cyber criminals are leveraging the power of AI to clone voices, create realistic video impersonations, and mimic suppliers. They are tricking employees into approving multi-million dollar transactions, and unfortunately, it&#8217;s working. Remember the deepfake CFO who orchestrated a $25 million transfer over a Zoom call? That&#8217;s just one example of how sophisticated these attacks have become.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s look at some numbers to contextualise the problem. Cybersecurity budgets are creeping upwards &#8211; around <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8% in 2024<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The talent shortage is crippling, with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">500,000 unfilled cybersecuri jobs in the US<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Meanwhile, cybercrime is projected to cost a staggering <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$12 trillion in 2025<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The math simply doesn&#8217;t add up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A legitimate business can only allocate a percentage of its budget to cybersecurity. Cybercriminals, on the other hand, dedicate 100% of their resources to committing fraud. They&#8217;re playing with a full deck.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, many companies are stuck in a reactive cycle: buy more tools, hire more specialists, run &#8220;check-box&#8221; training. It&#8217;s an unsustainable arms race. We&#8217;re throwing money in a bottomless pit, without results.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The harsh reality check: We are in the cyber criminal\u2019s trap\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I want to highlight 3 points to support my thinking:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Defensive technology is constantly being outpaced<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: For every dollar invested in detection, criminals are investing a fraction to bypass it. Offensive technology is cheaper and mo readily available on the dark web, giving them a distinct advantage.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Security teams are drowning in false alarms: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The quest for hyper-vigilance is leading to a deluge of false positives, burning out analysts and creating alert fatigue. Real threats are getting lost in the noise.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Compliance costs are eating up budgets: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A significant portion of security spending\u00a0 dedicated to documenting risks, leaving less for actual preventative measures.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cybersecurity spending has become a black hole. No matter how much we invest, attacks are still getting through. Why? Because criminals aren&#8217;t always hacking systems; they are hacking people. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A well-timed email, a cloned voice note, a convincing deepfake Zoom call \u2013 if an employee believes it, no amount of security technology can stop them from acting on it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The solution: Building a fraud-aware workforce<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If budgets are flat, security teams are stretched thin, and technology alone is not enough, what&#8217;s t answer?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, how about we tap into our latent pool of salaried employees? What if we build a fraud-aware workforce, and empower every employee to become the secure gateway?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deepfake fraud exploits human trust. But humans also possess the solution: critical thinking and pattern recognition, qualities that AI cannot easily replicate. A trained employee might notice subtle inconsistencies in a deepfake video \u2013 a lack of the CEO&#8217;s usual sarcasm, perhaps \u2013 and decide to proceed with caution.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employees are also a highly scalable defense. Instead of relying on a few experts, organizations need to equip <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">everyone <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with the skills to spot and stop deepfake threats. This amplifies our defensi capabilities exponentially. Very quickly, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">employees go from being \u201cAttack Surfaces\u201d to being \u201cDefence Forces\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3>How do we build this scalable defence force?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have seen fast and fantastic results with the following:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Show, Don&#8217;t Just Tell:\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teach employees what deepfake fraud looks like by showing them real-world examples. Explain the attacker&#8217;s psychology, just as the attacker understands the victim&#8217;s.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use internal case studies (if you have them) to illustrate the real-world impact. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">c. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provide focused training for high-risk teams like finance, HR, and senior executive tailoring the content to the specific threats they fac\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Simulate, Don&#8217;t Just Lecture:\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Theoretical training is useless if employees cannot identify a real attack. Run realistic deepfake vulnerability assessments that mirror real-world scenarios.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use cloned voice calls, impersonated executive videos, and AI-generated emails that bypass security gateways.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If criminals are impersonating your executives, why aren&#8217;t you simulating those scams to train your employees?\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><b>Shift the Mindset:\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deepfake fraud is not just a CISO problem; it&#8217;s a business risk. Foster a culture where employees feel empowered to question unusual requests, even from senior leaders.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Encourage a &#8220;pause and verify&#8221; mentality, especially when money or sensitive data is involved. Move away from the &#8220;act fast&#8221; culture that often leaves us vulnerable.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Make fraud harder:\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Implement secondary verification steps for urgent, sensitive, or financial reque <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">b. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reassess your executives&#8217; online presence and ensure they&#8217;re not inadvertently making social engineering easier. Are they oversharing travel plans or personal details?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Thinking differently about security<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, we need to invest in defensive technology and robust processes. But we also need to invest in our people. We need employees who:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understand the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">why <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">behind the security protocols.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feel psychologically safe to question authority.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are empowered to act, not just escalate.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cybercriminals are using AI to scale their attacks. We need to be just as strategic in scaling our defences. This means testing our employees <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">before <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the criminals do. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best security investment is not always another tool. It&#8217;s a workforce that knows when they&#8217;re being played. Because in a world<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">where AI can fake faces, voices, and messages, a curious, cautious, and well-trained employee is the most valuable line of defence we have.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are your thoughts on this?
