That\u2019s why I\u2019m proud to be part of the Data Skills Gateway, a transformative initiative designed to ensure that everyone, no matter their background or circumstances, can access the skills they need to thrive in this new landscape.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"684\" data-end=\"1106\">At its heart, the Data Skills Gateway is about inclusion and empowerment. I\u2019ve seen firsthand how the benefits of the digital economy can\u2014and should\u2014extend far beyond tech professionals. Whether it&#8217;s a young girl in school who might feel discouraged by the male-dominated image of tech, a parent returning to the workforce after a career break, or someone facing redundancy due to automation, our work opens doors for all.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1108\" data-end=\"1633\">The programme spans the entire learning journey\u2014from early years education right through to adult learning\u2014so no one is left behind. We support people from all walks of life, including individuals with disabilities, those from disadvantaged backgrounds, and people with varying levels of education. We work closely with partners who are best placed to support a wide range of learners, helping each person get the most out of the programme. In doing so, we\u2019re building a more inclusive and resilient workforce for the future.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1635\" data-end=\"1685\">The Gateway is structured around four key strands:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1686\" data-end=\"1820\">\n<li data-start=\"1686\" data-end=\"1719\">\n<p data-start=\"1688\" data-end=\"1719\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dataschools.education\/?page_id=5809&amp;preview=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Data Education in Schools<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1720\" data-end=\"1754\">\n<p data-start=\"1722\" data-end=\"1754\"><a href=\"https:\/\/datacolleges.education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Data Education in Colleges<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1755\" data-end=\"1793\">\n<p data-start=\"1757\" data-end=\"1793\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ddi.ac.uk\/case-studies\/data-skills-in-universities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Data Education in Universities<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1794\" data-end=\"1820\">\n<p data-start=\"1796\" data-end=\"1820\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dataskillsforwork.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Data Skills for Work<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1822\" data-end=\"2131\">Each strand is tailored to meet learners where they are, offering relevant, accessible, and practical skills development. And we\u2019re not trying to turn everyone into data scientists or coders. What we focus on is building strong foundational data and digital skills\u2014the kind now required in around 90% of jobs.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2133\" data-end=\"2496\">This approach feels more important than ever, especially as technologies like artificial intelligence and robotics continue to reshape the job market. While these innovations create demand for highly skilled roles, they also affect nearly every profession. Through the Gateway, we help individuals adapt, upskill, and stay competitive in a rapidly changing world.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2498\" data-end=\"3308\">The programme\u2019s impact hasn\u2019t gone unnoticed. We\u2019ve been honoured to receive numerous awards for our work, standing out among hundreds of UK-wide entries for our innovative, cross-sector approach. One particular highlight for me came in 2024, when the <strong data-start=\"2750\" data-end=\"2779\">Data Education in Schools<\/strong> strand won the <strong data-start=\"2795\" data-end=\"2854\">British Data Award for Education Initiative of the Year<\/strong>. That was the second year in a row we were recognised by the British Data Awards. In 2023, we were thrilled to receive the <strong data-start=\"2978\" data-end=\"3018\">Data for Good Initiative of the Year<\/strong> Award, celebrating the work we did\u2014funded by Skills Development Scotland\u2014to develop and test more than 500 new British Sign Language signs related to Cyber Security, Computing Science, and Data Science. It was a powerful reflection of our commitment to accessibility and meaningful impact.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3310\" data-end=\"3666\">As part of the <strong data-start=\"3325\" data-end=\"3379\">Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region Deal<\/strong>, the Data Skills Gateway, which we run out of the <strong data-start=\"3430\" data-end=\"3457\">University of Edinburgh<\/strong>, plays a vital role in regional economic development. But its influence reaches well beyond our geography. I see it as a model for how inclusive, forward-thinking education can prepare society for the future.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3668\" data-end=\"4073\">In a world where data is power, I\u2019m passionate about ensuring that power is shared. To me, it\u2019s not just about learning new skills\u2014it\u2019s about creating new opportunities, building confidence, and shaping a more equitable digital future for everyone.
