As AI reshapes our world faster than we imagined, the question we face isn\u2019t whether we need an AI-ready workforce \u2014 it\u2019s how quickly we can build one that\u2019s inclusive, imaginative, and equipped for what\u2019s next.<\/p>\n

We believe this shift is about reimagining the entire talent lifecycle, from nursery to boardroom. That\u2019s why, when asked to contribute to techUK\u2019s spotlight on the UK\u2019s AI ecosystem, I brought together colleagues from across disciplines to co-create our collective view. What emerged was clear: technical skills for the future are vital, but they\u2019re not enough for an AI world.<\/p>\n

AI isn\u2019t the future. It\u2019s here \u2014 and accelerating.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe rapid adoption and rate of change is phenomenal,\u201d said David Wilson, a technical consultant. \u201cWhen I first started exploring AI, I thought AGI was 20 years away. Now I think it could be five.\u201d<\/p>\n

This acceleration is already transforming job markets.\u00a0The World Economic Forum\u2019s Future of Jobs Report 2025<\/a>\u00a0shows the most in-demand skills are not technical or literacy. Analytical thinking, creative thinking, resilience, and curiosity top the list. These are not \u2019nice-to-haves’ \u2014 they are critical for navigating an AI-infused economy.<\/p>\n

As AI continues to evolve and take on more tasks, the role of human input is shifting. In this new landscape, meaning and purpose are becoming the key motivators- especially for younger generations, who may be asking \u201cWhat\u2019s the point?\u201d. AI can feel like just another obstacle, but those who are grounded in a strong sense of why will be the ones who adapt, thrive and find their place.<\/p>\n

Creativity and STEM<\/h3>\n

One of the most thought-provoking tensions that emerged in our workshop was between investing in creativity versus technical STEM proficiency. Some argued, reasonably, that AI development demands strong foundations in maths, data science, and engineering. As one colleague put it, \u201cIn a tight fiscal environment, prioritising vocational STEM training offers more immediate return.\u201d<\/p>\n

But others challenged that view. \u201cWe don\u2019t need more professional artists,\u201d said Joanna Finlay, Consulting Manager, \u201cbut we do need kids to do music, dance, art \u2014 because it makes their brains more agile and imaginative.\u201d<\/p>\n

I agree. These creative capacities are what AI can\u2019t (yet) replicate \u2014 but exactly what we need to design the ethical, intuitive, and inclusive tech of the future.<\/p>\n

Consulting Manager Mark Henderson captured this perfectly:<\/p>\n

\u201cAn AI-ready workforce might actually be 80% AI. So the human 20%? That better be exceptional. It had better be creative, ethical, and curious \u2014 or we\u2019ll just be dominated by the tools we\u2019ve built.\u201d<\/p>\n

Collectively we explored a future that isn’t STEM or arts \u2014 maybe it\u2019s Createch: the fusion of creativity and technology. As Charles Landry, a leading\u202finternational authority\u202fon the use of\u202fimagination\u202fand\u202fcreativity\u202fin\u202furban change, says, \u201cDistinctions between \u2018cultural\u2019, \u2018creative\u2019 and \u2018digital\u2019 enterprises are fast eroding.\u201d This interplay must start early \u2014 and it must be deliberate.<\/p>\n

Start young. Upskill wide. Embed learning for life.<\/h3>\n

Our collective view is simple: we need to start early, learn differently, and adapt constantly.<\/p>\n

\u201cAI should be taught at primary school,\u201d said Jonathan Cave, Consulting Manager. \u201cIt\u2019s as important now as maths and english.\u201d Fellow Consulting Manager, Selina Satchell agreed: \u201cThere\u2019s a chunk of development before primary school \u2014 nursery even \u2014 where kids are already engaging with AI-powered tools.\u201d<\/p>\n

But education alone won\u2019t bridge the gap. We must rethink learning across the workforce. That means:<\/p>\n
