It\u2019s clear we\u2019re at a pivotal moment. Departments are under mounting pressure to do more with less, and suppliers are feeling that same squeeze.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>There\u2019s a strong message coming from the top: AI and automation are no longer optional. They\u2019re essential tools in rethinking how we attract, assess, and onboard top talent into the public sector. At Sopra Steria we\u2019ve had a front-row seat to these conversations, and the appetite for AI is growing rapidly.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Here\u2019s a bit of insight:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h3>Where is AI\u00a0making an impact?<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Marketing and attraction:<\/strong>\u00a0clients want to use data-driven insights to craft campaigns that resonate with diverse candidate pools and optimise job placements.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Assessment and selection:<\/strong>\u00a0there\u2019s interest in intelligent screening, psychometric tools, and skills-based matching. While there\u2019s understandable nervousness\u2014especially with stories of bias in big tech\u2014public sector organisations are keen to deploy these tools responsibly.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Onboarding:<\/strong>\u00a0automating workflows and paperwork helps new hires integrate seamlessly. AI can also support faster security clearances, reducing time-to-hire and administrative burden without compromising compliance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Application Tracking Systems (ATS):<\/strong>\u00a0everyone has a love-hate relationship with their ATS. Enhancing these platforms with natural language processing and AI workflows can improve both candidate and recruiter experiences.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Candidate communication:<\/strong>\u00a0generative AI is being used to power chatbots and communication tools, keeping candidates informed and engaged throughout the process.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>\n<h3>Starting the AI journey<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Each public sector area faces unique pressures. Yet all are being asked to harness AI responsibly, fairly, and transparently. The growing number of UK AI policies like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gds.blog.gov.uk\/2025\/02\/10\/launching-the-artificial-intelligence-playbook-for-the-uk-government\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\">Launching the Artificial Intelligence Playbook for the UK Government<\/a>\u00a0aren&#8217;t\u00a0just about technical standards; they also cover ethical, legal, and operational principles. These policies help ensure AI aligns with public sector values.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>As suppliers and public sector organisations, we need to engage with these policies together. Doing so equips us to make better decisions when procuring or deploying AI tools, navigate risks like bias and data misuse, and demonstrate that innovation can still be human-centred.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h3>Challenges we\u2019re\u00a0encountering<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Nervousness around AI is normal\u00a0and healthy. If implemented poorly, AI can pose risks. But when done right, it\u2019s incredibly effective.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Some of the biggest concerns we\u2019ve found are:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Lack of in-house expertise.<\/li>\n<li>Policy, governance and accountability.<\/li>\n<li>Over-reliance on suppliers.<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty interpreting AI outputs.<\/li>\n<li>Weak integration with legal obligations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<p>Many departments are still building robust governance frameworks for onboarding AI. Our AI practice director,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/neilgladstone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\">Neil Gladstone<\/a> , has been instrumental in helping clients navigate this space.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h3>Looking forward<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Despite the challenges, the benefits are compelling:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Faster screening of applications.<\/li>\n<li>Predictive insights.<\/li>\n<li>Reduced human bias (when properly monitored).<\/li>\n<li>Workforce modernisation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<p>The recruitment technology landscape is vast, and even as a supplier, it can feel overwhelming. Knowing where to start is key.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>If you\u2019re in the public sector, here are a few critical questions to ask:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>What is the business problem or opportunity I\u2019m looking to address with AI?<\/li>\n<li>Where is the data hosted?<\/li>\n<li>Who has access to it?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<p>Responsible AI adoption is non-negotiable. We must be open, trustworthy, and transparent, maintaining human oversight throughout.
